Alan Morton Dershowitz, a prominent figure in American law and academia, embarked on his journey of love and commitment with his first wife, Sue Barlach. This union, shaped by youthful passion and shared roots, played a significant role in shaping Dershowitz’s personal and family life.

Dershowitz and Sue Barlach’s story began during their high school years at a Jewish summer camp nestled in the Catskills. Describing Sue Barlach as an “Orthodox Jewish girl” in his book “Chutzpah,” Dershowitz highlighted the depth of their connection, rooted in shared values and cultural bonds.

The two exchanged vows in 1959 when Dershowitz was 20 and Barlach was 18, setting the stage for a journey that would encompass the joys of parenthood. Their marital bliss led to the birth of two sons, Elon Dershowitz who would later become a film producer, and Jamin Dershowitz carving his path as an attorney.

The family dynamics, initially founded on love and shared dreams, faced challenges, resulting in the couple’s separation in 1973 and subsequent divorce in 1976. The divorce proceedings took an emotional toll, marked by custody battles and allegations.

Although Barlach was initially granted custody, Alan Dershowitz, fueled by a father’s love, fought relentlessly to secure full custody of their children. The legal battles, underscored by personal turmoil, highlighted the complexities of the human experience.

Tragically, Sue Barlach’s life took a devastating turn, leading to her untimely death. According to reports, she drowned in the East River in an apparent suicide on December 31, 1983. This poignant chapter serves as a reminder of the fragility of human relationships and the enduring impact they have on the lives of those involved.
