Sarah Garza Michael Eugene Archer, better known by the stage name D'Angelo, is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. D'Angelo is associated with the neo-soul movement, along with artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell and his collaborator Angie Stone. The son of a Pentecostal pastor in Richmond, Va., D'Angelo learned the piano as a child. At the age of eighteen, he won the amateur talent competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem for three consecutive weeks. After briefly collaborating with hip-hop group I.D.U., his first big hit came in 1994 as a co-writer and co-producer of the song "U Will Know". His first solo album, Brown Sugar, was hugely successful and sold over two million copies. His next album, Voodoo, topped the US Billboard 200 charts. His first single, "Untitled", entered the R&B chart and won the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B; Likewise, Voodoo won the Best R&B Album award.
