Barry Humphries is a well-known Australian comedian, actor, and author.

At Melbourne University’s Union Theatre, on December 12, 1955, the “Olympic Hostess” stage skit, the first to feature Mrs. Norm Everage, had its debut.

When he was 20 years old and touring rural Victoria with the MTC in the Twelfth Night, Humphries writes in his critically acclaimed autobiography More Please (1992) that he had invented a character like Edna in the back of a bus.

He gave gratitude to Peter O’Shaughnessy, his mentor at the time, saying that without his “nurturing and promotion, the character of Edna Everage would have been nipped in the bud after 1956 and never come to flower, while the character of Sandy Stone would never have taken shape as a presence on the stage”
