The world of professional wrestling is in mourning as it bids farewell to one of its most beloved and influential figures, Brett Eugene Woyan, known to fans far and wide by his iconic ring name, Brett Sawyer. Born on August 10, 1960, Brett Sawyer’s journey in the world of professional wrestling spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the sport he cherished. On September 9, 2023, he departed this world, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of wrestling history.

Early Life and Wrestling Aspirations

Brett Sawyer’s story began in the sun-soaked streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, where he spent his formative years. He was a product of Dixie M. Hollins High School, where his passion for wrestling ignited. It was during these early days that he first stepped onto the mat as an amateur wrestler, sowing the seeds of what would become a lifelong dedication to the world of professional wrestling.

A Family of Wrestling Legends

Brett Sawyer’s entry into the world of professional wrestling was guided by two remarkable figures: Ricky Steamboat and his own elder brother, Bruce Woyan, a wrestling legend known to fans as Buzz Sawyer. Under their tutelage, Brett made his wrestling debut at a remarkably young age of 16 in 1976.

With his brother by his side, Brett adopted the ring name “Hacksaw” Brett Sawyer, and the duo formed a formidable tag team, setting the stage for a remarkable wrestling journey that would take them to every corner of the wrestling world.

Champion of the Pacific Northwest

The early 1980s saw Brett Sawyer’s star shine brightly in the Portland, Oregon-based Pacific Northwest Wrestling promotion. Between 1982 and 1984, Brett achieved an astounding feat, capturing the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship on four separate occasions and securing the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championship five times.

Feuds and Triumphs Across the Nation

Brett Sawyer’s wrestling prowess was not limited to the Pacific Northwest. He and his brother embarked on unforgettable feuds in the Atlanta, Georgia-based Georgia Championship Wrestling promotion. One of their defining moments came in 1983 when they squared off against the formidable duo known as The Road Warriors, ultimately defeating them to capture the NWA National Tag Team Championship. In the same year, Brett Sawyer also ascended to the summit of wrestling achievement, clinching the NWA National Heavyweight Championship.

In 1984, Brett Sawyer’s journey took him to the wrestling-rich landscape of San Antonio, Texas, where he partnered with Chicky Starr to secure the SCW Southwest Tag Team Championship.

The Legacy of a Lifetime

Brett Sawyer’s wrestling journey led him to various promotions, including Jim Crockett Promotions in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Heart of America Sports Attractions promotion in Kansas City, Missouri, where he won the NWA Central States Heavyweight Championship.

He returned to Jim Crockett Promotions in 1986, competing in the prestigious Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament. The international stage beckoned as well, with Brett and his brother embarking on a memorable tour of Japan with New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 1987.

In addition to his accomplishments as a wrestler, Brett Sawyer played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of wrestling talent. He, alongside his brother, trained the legendary Ken Shamrock during the late 1980s.

Brett Sawyer made a brief return to the spotlight in 1991, wrestling three matches for World Championship Wrestling under the name “Brett Wayne.” However, by 1998, he decided to hang up his wrestling boots, marking the end of his illustrious in-ring career.
