Brian Karem White House and Sebastian Gorka

Karem gained attention for his interactions with administration officials while covering the Trump presidency. Karem confronted then-deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on “inflammatory” comments about the performance of the press while covering President Donald Trump on June 27, 2017.

One year later, Karem confronted Sanders again on the Administration’s policy of seizing children from their parents at the United States border crossings, saying “Come on, Sarah, you’re a parent! Don’t you have any empathy for what these people are going through? They have less than you do. Sarah, come on, seriously.”

Following an event at the White House Rose Garden, Karem called conservative social media representatives in attendance “a group of people eager for demonic possession,” on July 11, 2019. The remark prompted Sebastian Gorka, a former deputy assistant to President Trump and now a radio talk-show host, to confront Karem, yelling across the lawn: “And you’re a journalist, right?” he replied with what some consider a taunt saying, “Come on over here and talk to me, brother.

We can go outside as well as have a long conversation.” Accusing Karem of issuing a threat, Gorka walked across the lawn yelling, “You’re not a journalist! You’re a punk!” in front of a row of White House media and cameras.

The White House Press Office suspended Karem’s press pass on August 2, 2019, following the July 11 incident. Karem filed a lawsuit in response before U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Judge Rudolph Contreras blocked the suspension.

Brian Karem Reporter and Career

Karem joined The Montgomery County Courier in Conroe, Texas as a sports editor in the year 1983. After leaving the Courier in the year 1984, Karem switched to television joining WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky as a political reporter.

He went back to Texas in the year 1986 to work at KMOL-TV in San Antonio. In the year 1990, Karem was jailed in contempt of court for refusing to disclose the name of a source who arranged an interview with a suspect involved in killing a police officer. During the Gulf War, he was among the first reporters to enter Kuwait City after its liberation.

During the National Drug Summit in San Antonio, Texas in the year 1992, he asked then-President George H. W. Bush to comment on claims referring to the event as a “joke”. Karem lost his job after the incident but later gained an interview with Sam Donaldson on ABC as well as a mention from The Tonight Show host Jay Leno.

Following his termination from KMOL, Karem joined the television program, America’s Most Wanted as a producer as well as a correspondent. While covering the war on drugs, he became the first American journalist allowed inside Pablo Escobar’s palatial prison after Escobar’s escape from Colombian authorities.

In the year 1997, Karem joined WDAF-TV in Kansas City, Missouri as an investigative reporter. While at WDAF-TV, Karem alleges that his superiors suppressed a story on the pesticide chemical, Dursban, prompting him to leave the station.

White House suspends Brian Karem’s hard pass

The White House Correspondents’ Association said on September 14, 2019, in a statement it was “deeply concerned” by the decision. “Such a move could have a chilling effect on working journalists. As we’ve said before, we believe everyone should conduct themselves professionally at the White House.”

Karem is represented by First Amendment attorney Ted Boutrous, who was part of the team that represented CNN when Acosta battled the White House over his credentials. Boutrous told CNN Business the White House sent him an emailed version of its decision around 1:30 pm ET.

In a statement, Boutrous argued that the White House’s decision “violates the First Amendment as well as due process and is yet another example of this administration’s unconstitutional campaign to punish reporters and press coverage that President Trump doesn’t like.”

“The President and his administration are fostering an atmosphere of hostility and violence towards journalists that cannot be tolerated, and they are illegally using the credential process to stifle freedom of the press and to disrupt the flow of vital information to the American people,” Boutrous added. “We intend to seek immediate relief in federal court.”

Karem told CNN Business by phone Friday evening. “We all knew it was going to happen,” Karem said. “It happened with Jim [Acosta]. We knew it was a matter of time they would try it again. I wasn’t the first and I won’t be the last.”

“This is the White House ignoring due process, ignoring the First Amendment, going after reporters, chopping this up piecemeal, going after us one after a time,” Karem said. “Trying very much to silence a press that has been critical of this administration. And they will use any method to do it.”

Given that he did have the ability to appeal the White House’s preliminary decision from earlier this month, CNN Business asked Karem about the idea he had due process in this case. “It’s a kangaroo court,” Karem said. “It’s the exact opposite of due process. ‘You’re guilty, want to come in here and tell us why you’re not?’ No, that’s not due process. That’s the exact opposite of due process.”
