Cookie Johnson HIV

Magic Johnson announced his HIV-positive status and retirement from the Los Angeles Lakers to the world in 1991. He is also one of the most well-known people living with the virus today.

Cookie Johnson’s autobiography Believing in Magic: My Story of Love, Overcoming Adversity, and Keeping the Faith recounts the events of that time span. Even though Johnson’s book isn’t set to be released

The two hugged each other after Johnson revealed his diagnosis, according to the Daily Mail. Cookie had other ideas when he told his wife she could leave him if she chose. She told him to get down on his knees and pray, saying they’d “beat it together.

Note, this was 1991, when HIV was already regarded as a death penalty but most people connected it with homosexual white men. Combination therapy—modern antiretrovirals—would take another five years to change the epidemic’s trajectory

Although her blood tests were negative, Johnson’s public statement that he was infected with Hiv and would be retiring from the Lakers created a new issue.

Cookie revealed that she met with HIV activist Elizabeth Glaser before November 7, 1991, press conference, who encouraged Johnson to be the disease’s public face. According to Cookie, the most challenging obstacles they encountered during their marriage were not as difficult as those they faced during their 12-year relationship before the wedding.

Cookie Johnson and Magic Johnson

Magic and Cookie met at a picnic as college freshmen in 1977. “It was so funny because every girl on campus wanted to meet him,” Cookie recalls of their first encounter. “I just told myself, ‘Forget it.’ He won’t choose me over any of these other ladies.”

During the early days, Cookie and Magic remained by each other’s side. “There were a lot of breakups and reunions, as well as a lot of challenges. Cookie said, “We’ve been through everything together.”

Many people questioned Cookie’s commitment to their marriage after Magic revealed that he was HIV positive. Cookie has said, “I never even considered leaving.” “It wasn’t difficult to stick by him.”

Cookie Johnson and EJ Johnson

EJ Johnson was born in 1991 to former Los Angeles Laker legend Magic Johnson and his wife, Cookie. As a child, he came out to his parents as gay.

The mother and son discussed how the 28-year-old told his parents the truth and his father’s initial harsh reaction in the newest episode of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk

During the candid interview with Pinkett Smith, the 59-year-old revealed that she first noticed her son was different when he was three years old and wanted to wear princess dresses to school and later in life. When he was a child, he had a thing for her shoes and made it a point to pick flowers in the outfield while playing baseball.

When EJ’s mother witnessed an encounter between her son and a friend when he was 15, she realized it was time to speak.

EJ finally got confident revealing to his father the truth about his sexuality, but Cookie remembers that the discussion was “tough” and that she had to have a serious talk with the five-time NBA champion.

EJ stated that they spoke the next day, but their relationship didn’t continue without hiccups until after he returned from college.

Cookie Johnson and Elisa Johnson

Elisa was adopted at the age of three days by Magic and Cookie Johnson, but she “never felt like an outsider growing up,” she told CR. Her family didn’t keep her childhood secret from her, and when she was 18 years old, she met her biological mother, Dawn.

In 2016, the two also shot a glamorous reunion scene for EJNYC. “I still get a little anxious before I see my birth mother, and I think she does too because we’re both really emotional people,” Elisa admitted, adding that seeing her mother is always “unbelievable.”
