Evan Thomas Bargain Block

Evan and his partner Keith Bynum are the stars on HGTV’S Bargain Block. The partners buy run-down and abandoned properties and transform them into affordable, stylish starter homes for first-time homebuyers.

The couple got into real estate after Bynum got into carpentry and woodworking and would make farmhouse tables which he sold on Craigslist. After fixing up their place, he decided to buy a home in a remote Rocky Mountain town to renovate and flip. He later sold the home and Thomas decided to join the business but they wanted to work in another city with friendlier clientele and a lower barrier to entry. This saw the couple move to Detroit in early August 2017.

They bought a house that had no working plumbing, barely working electrical, and an unusable kitchen and bathroom. The house took a month to fix and eventually became the first one they sold in Detroit.

They normally buy homes on the cheap, often through the Detroit Land Bank, for as little as $1,000. The homes require a ton of work, all of which they do themselves. They remodel with smart designer features like cedar shake on the exterior, pass throughs on the staircase, and accented painting or wallpaper. They also match the houses with custom or handmade items to elevate the whole product.
