A broadcaster whose obsession is basketball, Fran Fraschilla has made a name for himself by working with his brain and mouth. When it comes to basketball, Fran is not just a prominent part of ESPN’s NBA draft coverage, but also an integral part of the league’s DNA. More so, Fran’s ability to build relationships has established him as a true coach and broadcaster. Find out why Fran Fraschilla was once regarded as one of the hottest coaches in the country.

Early Life and Career

A native New Yorker, Fran Fraschilla’s date of birth is August 30, 1958. There is little or no information available regarding his parents and family background. But it is common knowledge that Fraschilla is the oldest of seven children born into an average family as his father worked as a painter. More so, the broadcaster was born and raised in Brooklyn. He is an alumnus of Brooklyn College where he bagged a degree in American history.

Fran Fraschilla is best recognized as a basketball coach who grew to become one of America’s hottest coaches. Interestingly, the Brooklyn native was already certain of his career path even before he became a teenager. By age 12, the ambitious lad had begun writing letters to coaches across different cities in the country. Fran eventually worked his way into realizing his coaching dreams and mentored at the collegiate level for 23 years. He first began his basketball coaching career as an assistant coach for no less than five college teams such as New York Tech, Ohio State University, Providence College, University of Rhode Island, and Ohio University.

Fraschilla later became a head coach at three institutions including Manhattan, St. John’s, and New Mexico. Between 1992 and 1996, he was the head coach at Manhattan College, where he left stellar records, led the team to several championship victories and was named Coach of the Year by various sports groups/associations. Fran later moved on to St. John’s University in 1996. He worked as the head coach for the school’s team for two years and also left remarkable records such as leading them to the NCAA Championship before his exit in 1998. The next year, the Brooklyn native landed another job as a head coach at the University of New Mexico. During his three-year stint, Fran Fraschilla also led the school’s team to various championships and clinched an award in 2000.

Thereafter, Fran Fraschilla retired from his coaching career and joined ESPN in 2003 as a college basketball game and studio analyst. Part of his responsibilities and duties with the network includes the NBA coverage and working as the league’s draft expert on international players. While heading ESPN’s international scouting, Fraschilla has aged into the network’s longest-running broadcaster on the draft set.

However, the former head coach does not consider himself as the main act on ESPN’s draft coverage but more of “role-playing middle-inning relief pitcher.” Besides his job with the NBA Draft, Fran also runs commentary for the FIBA Basketball World Cup and has worked as an analyst covering the NBA and high schools basketball.

Even after retiring from his coaching career, Fraschilla still plays a role in the coaching community. He is considered as a mentor to younger coaches and a sounding board for older ones since he is no longer active in competition. More recently, Fran Fraschilla was inducted into the Basketball Old-Timers Hall of Fame of America in 2019.

Fran Fraschilla has consciously guarded his personal life away from the media. Although there is little or nothing known about his dating history and family, it is no secret that the former coach is happily married to his longtime heartthrob Meg O’Connell Fraschilla. His wife has proven to be a more private person as there is no information about her except for the fact that she once worked as a publicist at the Southwest Conference and Louisiana State University.

Fran and Meg’s union has produced two sons James and Matthew. Interestingly, Fraschilla’s sons also inherited his love for basketball as each of them played college basketball (James at the University of Oklahoma and Matt at Harvard University), and are now entrenched on their own career paths as coaches just like their dad.
