Leslie Herbert Wexner, a titan in the business world and the visionary behind Bath & Body Works, Inc., embarked on his entrepreneurial journey with humble beginnings, a keen eye for business, and a passion for retail.

Wexner’s foray into the retail landscape was shaped by his early experiences working in his parents’ clothing store, Leslie’s. Taking charge of the store when his parents were away, Wexner honed his business acumen by meticulously analyzing profit and loss margins, particularly in the realm of women’s apparel.

In 1963, armed with a loan of $5,000 from his aunt Ida, Wexner laid the foundation for what would become an empire. Doubling this initial investment with matching funds from a bank, he established the Limited, a clothing retail company.

The journey began on August 10, 1963, with the opening of the first Limited store in the Kingsdale Shopping Center in Upper Arlington, Ohio. The success was swift, and within a year, a second store opened its doors. By the end of the decade, Wexner took the Limited public, marking a significant milestone in his entrepreneurial trajectory.

The 1970s saw substantial expansion, with the 100th Limited store opening in 1976. Wexner strategically acquired Mast Industries, a manufacturer and importer, gaining a competitive edge in the industry.

The 1980s proved transformative as Wexner, with his keen business instincts, doubled his retail holdings. Notably, he acquired Victoria’s Secret for a mere $1 million, transforming it into a billion-dollar enterprise by the 1990s. This acquisition showcased Wexner’s ability to identify and elevate brands to unparalleled heights.

As the 1990s unfolded, Wexner continued his impressive business expansion. He founded Bath & Body Works, a retail chain specializing in soaps, lotions, candles, and fragrances. Over time, the conglomerate evolved and rebranded as Bath & Body Works.

Under Wexner’s leadership, the business empire expanded to include other iconic brands such as Henri Bendel, Abercrombie & Fitch, Express, and La Senza. The diversity of these ventures highlighted Wexner’s ability to navigate various retail landscapes and cater to diverse consumer needs.

Les Wexner’s entrepreneurial journey is a testament to his visionary leadership, strategic acumen, and relentless pursuit of excellence in the world of retail. From the Limited to Bath & Body Works and beyond, his legacy is etched into the fabric of the industry, inspiring future generations of entrepreneurs.
