Michael Green Known for his tales of the rural South, Howard Gerald “Jerry” Clower (September 28, 1926 – August 24, 1998) was a famous country comedian who rose to fame in the 1950s. He was often referred to as “The Mouth of the Mississippi.” Clower was born in Liberty, Mississippi, and joined the Navy shortly after graduating from high school in 1944. He served in the Navy for two years. He was a Radioman Third Class (RMN3) when he was discharged from the Army in 1946, and he had won the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with two bronze service stars), and the World War II Victory Medal during his service. His next stop was Mississippi State University, where he majored in agriculture and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity while still playing collegiate football. Clower began working as a county agent and subsequently as a seed dealer after graduating from high school in 1951. In 1954, he started working as a fertiliser salesman for Mississippi Chemical.
In order to increase his sales, he had established a reputation for delivering amusing tales to his customers.
Edwin “Big Ed” Wilkes and Bud Andrews in Lubbock, Texas, eventually obtained copies of Clower’s speeches on cassette tapes, which they used to commission him to create a better-quality recording, which they then distributed. MCA Records subsequently certified “The Coon Hunt” as a platinum album, indicating that it had sold more than $1 million in retail sales. Clower began by taking orders during his speaking engagements, eventually selling 8000 copies of his Lemon record label’s first album. Wilkes eventually submitted a copy of the song to Grant Turner at WSM radio in Nashville, and when Turner played it on the air, Clower exclaimed, “that thing broke free.” Clower’s door was shortly knocked on by MCA, who was giving him a contract.
