On November 26, 1939, Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee. She started her musical career by singing in a Baptist church chorus. Her unhappy childhood was due to her mother leaving the house when she was just 11 years old in an effort to flee her violent husband.

After their father remarried and departed the state, Turner and her sisters were left in the care of their grandmother. Turner met Ike, her future husband when he was touring the St. Louis club scene with his band, the Kings of Rhythm, in the late 1950s. Turner was a youthful, inexperienced 17-year-old at the time, and Ike was a 25-year-old.

Ike was not Tina’s type, and when she thought back on their first meeting, she compared him to the high school lads she was used to. Despite the fact that their professional connection eventually turned into love, Ike’s corporate goals continued to come first, even after she became pregnant with his child.

Ike wanted to dominate her financially and psychologically in order to bind her to him after realizing her potential as a valuable asset.

Ike gave Tina her well-known stage name during this time, disregarding her wishes. He named her “Tina” after a character from one of his favorite TV episodes and demanded that she take his last name, which suggested that they were married and that he was her owner.
