While it’s usually best to begin the procedure with a volume goal in mind, it isn’t strictly necessary for the first use.

What is the normal range for incentive spirometer?
Normal results are 70% or more for adults under 65. FVC/FEV-1 ratios below normal help your doctor rate the severity of your lung condition: Mild lung condition: 60% to 69% Moderate lung condition: 50% to 59%
What is a good number on a spirometer?
The second key spirometry measurement is FEV1. This is the amount of air you can force out of your lungs in 1 second.
…
FEV1 measurement.
| Percentage of predicted FEV1 value | Result |
|---|---|
| 80% or greater | normal |
| 70%–79% | mildly abnormal |
| 60%–69% | moderately abnormal |
| 50%–59% | moderate to severely abnormal |

How many mL is normal on a spirometer?
The typical value for a young adult male of normal size is about 3000 mL. C. The expiratory reserve volume, ERV, is the additional volume of air that can be expired after a normal or tidal expiration. A typical value is about 1100 mL for a young adult male.
What is normal lung capacity?
Among healthy adults, the average lung capacity is about 6 liters. Age, gender, body composition, and ethnicity are factors affecting the different ranges of lung capacity among individuals.
How do you read a spirometer?
You will also see another number on the spirometry test results — the FEV1/ FVC ratio. This number represents the percent of the lung size (FVC) that can be exhaled in one second. For example, if the FEV1 is 4 and the FVC is 5, then the FEV1/ FVC ratio would be 4/5 or 80%.
Can spirometer increase lung capacity?
Using an incentive spirometer teaches you how to take slow, deep breaths, and can be helpful to maximize lung capacity after surgery or when you have a progressive condition, such as lung disease. By using this device, you’re taking an active step in your recovery and healing.
What is a good lung function test result?
Lung volume is measured in litres. Your predicted total lung capacity (TLC) is based on your age, height, relationship and ethnicity, so results will differ from person to person. Normal results typically range between 80% and 120% of the prediction.
What is a good inspired volume?
The average inspiratory reserve volume is about 3000 mL in males and 2100 mL in females. Vital capacity. The total usable volume of the lungs that you can control. This is not the entire lung volume as it is impossible to voluntarily breathe all of the air out of your lungs.
