Jethro Tull: Dee Palmer Came Out Transgender – Wikipedia Details

Palmer changed her name to Dee after coming out as transgender and intersex in 1998. Palmer was born with genital ambiguity and was designated male at birth, requiring numerous operations, the most recent of which she received in her late twenties.

Palmer stated that gender dysphoria had been a part of her life since she was a child and that it “began to reassert itself again” in the year after her wife Maggie died in 1995. Palmer collaborated with Bert Jansch on her first album, Nicola, in 1967.

Terry Ellis, the manager of the early Jethro Tull, who was recording their debut album at Sound Techniques Studio in Chelsea, London, was then directed to her.

Palmer came up with arrangements for the horns and strings for Mick Abrahams’ “Move on Alone” from the This Was album on short notice.

The band adored her work and professional presentation, and she was shortly to return with a string quartet version of “A Christmas Song.”

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Palmer prepared string, brass, and woodwind sections for Jethro Tull songs before joining the band in 1976 and predominantly performing electronic keyboard instruments.
