Jonathan studied Fine Art & Chattels Valuation before working as a furniture porter at Philips Auctioneers in Edinburgh, where he learned a lot, including how difficult it is to lift a mahogany sideboard three stories by yourself!

Following that, he worked at Phillips in Guildford, a London valuation firm, and Drewett-Neate Auctioneers before joining Sotheby’s Sussex in 2002.

Jonathan became MD of Bellmans in 2005 and is more passionate about the antique market than he’s ever been, in addition to regular appearances on BBC’s Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Trip, and Flog It.

Jonathan believes auctioneering to be the most enjoyable aspect of his job. It’s a time to brag and have a good time. He stated that a competent auctioneer might make a difference. Jonathan enjoys driving across the south of England and visiting people’s houses in London. The adventure of a lifetime.

He occasionally discovers the most spectacular stuff in the most unlikely places, such as three pre-Raphaelite paintings in a retirement flat 3 miles from my saleroom or an obscure oil painting by Joseph Wright of Derby in a nearby village.

Jonathan believes that Bargain Hunt’s appeal stems from the show’s amazing combination of history and real-life personalities in a game-show structure with compelling specialists.

He also urges novices to enter the auctioneering industry, saying, “I could probably do better than that.”
