The writer mentioned that despite the era of hit reality shows about families and residents of New Jersey, the series’ unique big selling point was its dynamic with her husband and two retorting teenagers. This, he says, made it play like a combination of Real Housewives of New Jersey and Bewitched – mainly when their frustrations surfaced over her unsystematic communications with what she calls ‘Spirit.’

John Oliver criticized the media for producing shows such as this is a 2019 segment of Last Week Tonight. The show featured Caputo as well as other prominent TV psychics. John based his criticism on the idea that they convince viewers that psychic powers are real, and so give the ability to neighborhood psychics to prey on grieving families. Oliver added that when psychic abilities are presented as accurate, it encouraged a vast underworld of crooked vultures, more than happy to make money by offering an open line to the afterlife.
