Maria Quiban Plastic Surgery
On Monday, August 12, 2013, Sonu Ahluwalia, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at La Peer Health Systems in Los Angeles, spoke with Maria Quiban about her meniscus surgery, which he had performed on Quiban’s left knee. To a shock, this was not a first-time surgery Dr. Ahluwalia had performed on Quiban’s torn meniscus.
It was a second time – in the previous year, she underwent a meniscus repair on her right knee, and so this year she needed the same surgery on her left knee.
“If you open the kneecap up and look inside, the meniscus is this disc that sits inside there,” said Dr. Ahluwalia. “It’s a shock absorber. [Maria’s] meniscus was torn inside there. It was actually flipped all the way over, and that’s why it was hurting and clicking.”
What separates this surgery from Quiban’s past procedure was her utilization of “Google Glass,” a smooth band worn over the eyes that contains a microscopic camera, in order to document the procedure from her perspective.
Quiban said that her right knee felt fresh after her first surgery, and only half a month after her ongoing left knee surgery, there is as of now a colossal improvement. Notwithstanding being ready to come back to work after an only multi-week, Quiban just has two small bandages covering the two-incision points.
The reason behind the minuscule incisions and quick recovery time is Dr. Ahluwalia’s utilization of minimally invasive innovation by means of arthroscopy, which allows a specialist to see the inside of a joint through a camera.
“We put a little camera in one side and small instruments on the other side and trim the meniscus and that’s it,” said Dr. Ahluwalia about the arthroscopic procedure.
