The golfer is thoroughly American, and the 33-year-old relishes representing her country in these biennial international team competitions, but she also takes pride in her Korean heritage.

Growing up, Michelle learned athletic skills from her mother, a celebrated amateur golfer. Mrs. Wie was the one to introduce their family to golf.

It was clear from the beginning that Michelle, aka Big Wiesy has the potential to go pro. She now plays professionally on the LPGA Tour. She was just four years old when she began playing golf.

Shortly before her 16th birthday in 2015, she started her professional career after being supported by the majority of publicly and endorsements.

Byung and Bo welcomed Michelle on 11 October 1989, in Honolulu, Hawaii. They are of Korean heritage and immigrated to the United States from South Korea in the 1980s.

Michelle’s mom Bo is a former professional golfer in South Korea. In 1985, she represented the country in the women’s amateur golf championship.

Mrs. Bo is a strong-headed woman who also participated in the Miss Korea beauty pageant in her youth days. She inspired her daughter to pursue a career as a golf player.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Big Wiesy began playing golf for a USGA amateur championship when she turned 10 years old. She was the youngest athlete to be named for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links event.

Her dad, Byung wook also known as “B.J.,” was a former professor at the University of Hawaii, where he taught travel industry management.

When Michelle was born, she was a dual citizen of the United States and South Korea. The golf champion renounced her South Korean citizenship in 2013; however, she has a solid connection to her Korean roots.

In a conversation with The New York Times, Michelle shared that her mom and dad insisted to learn Korean. At the time, she didn’t see the need to learn the language, but she is now grateful that her parents encouraged her to keep in touch with her Korean roots.

She rarely passes up the chance to visit South Korea. Although Michelle represents a rival nation, she feels a sense of pride and affection among Koreans.

In 2018, Michelle won the U.S. Women’s Open. After the victory, she was spotted hugging her mom and dad from the 18th green.

On 16 June 2019, she uploaded a series of pictures with her dad on the occasion of father’s day. The two celebrated with the go-to celebratory drink Johnnie Walker, keeping their family tradition alive.

Sharing those photographs, Wie wrote on Instagram that Johnnie Walker had been her dad’s favorite since she could remember.

In an early conversation with LPGA media, she talked on the behalf of Byung and Bo, acknowledging them for their important role in her career.

Michelle remarked when she had her downs and when people doubted her, she was encouraged by her family to face the challenges.

According to Michelle, whenever she showed an ounce of doubt, her guardian just believed in her so hard that she started to believe in herself again.

As a child, she dreamt to attend and graduate from Stanford, winning the US Open, and winning in front of her hometown crowd in Hawaii.

Although, she has faced many life ups and downs while growing up. She has accomplished all her childhood desire with hard work and dedication.

Michelle is also proud of her Korean heritage and her grandfather, Sang-Kyu Wie, a war hero in South Korea.

Sang-Kyu won three U.S. medals as a pilot flying with the Americans during the Korean war in the 1950s. He completed many dangerous missions with the circumstances stacked against him.

The senior Wie relocated to the United State after the war for his study and earned Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. Later, he moved back to South Korea and served as an emeritus professor at Seoul National University.

On 15 October 2017, she uploaded a lovely picture with her grandpa on her 28th birthday. At the time, she played tournament golf for the first time in 6 weeks. It was a good moment for her as she got to play in front of her grandfather.

Her grandfather Sang-kyu’s painting has been hung in a T6 Mosquito Turboprop at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Ohio.

Late Sang-Kyu was honored with the medal for soaring below the radar on dangerous missions over cloud-covered mountain ranges as a forward air controller identifying anti-aircraft installations and other hazards.

Michelle feels blessed that she met her grandpa before he passed away. In an interview with Gold Channel, she shared that Sang was one of her life’s most influential people.
