Susanne and Klaus Friedrich Thiel are his parents. When Peter was a year old, his father worked as a chemical engineer in Cleveland, Ohio, when he and his family went to the United States.

Klaus went on to work for several mining businesses, giving Thiel and his younger brother, Patrick Michael Thiel, an itinerant upbringing. Thiel’s mother became a citizen of the United States, but his father did not.

The Thiels resided in South Africa and southwest Africa until moving to Foster City, California, in 1977. Peter attended seven different elementary schools.
