Algernod Lanier Washington, famously known by his stage name Plies, has left an indelible mark on the world of hip-hop. His journey from an aspiring football player to a renowned rapper is well-documented, but behind his rise to stardom stands a pivotal figure – his brother Ronnell Lawrence Lavatte.

While Plies’ musical journey has garnered attention, the role of Ronnell Lawrence Lavatte, affectionately known as Big Gates, is equally noteworthy. Together, they founded the independent record label Big Gates Records, setting the stage for Plies’ entrance into the music industry.

In the heart of the late 1990s, Plies and Big Gates joined forces to establish their record label, a venture that initially didn’t involve Plies as a rapper. It was during a demonstration for one of their artists that Plies’ hidden talent for rap emerged. Big Gates recognized the potential in Plies’ verse on the track “Tell Dem Krackers Dat,” and the decision to include it marked the beginning of Plies’ rap career.

The duo’s efforts to promote their music extended to frequent trips to Miami, which ultimately captured the attention of Slip-n-Slide Records. This pivotal moment marked Plies’ official entry into the music industry. From there, Plies’ musical trajectory soared, with hits like “Shawty” featuring T-Pain and “Hypnotized” featuring Akon, solidifying his place in the hip-hop world.

While Plies’ voice and lyrical prowess resonated with audiences, the collaborative spirit of Plies and Big Gates’ partnership cannot be overlooked. Together, they founded a record label, navigated the complexities of the music industry, and provided platforms for emerging talents to shine.

Plies’ journey from the football field to the studio is a testament to his resilience and passion, but it is equally a tribute to the unwavering support and foresight of his brother, Big Gates. Their shared journey underscores the importance of collaboration, dedication, and the power of believing in one another’s potential.

As Plies continues to make waves in the music world, it’s important to recognize the integral role that Ronnell Lawrence Lavatte, or Big Gates, played in shaping Plies’ path to success. Behind every great artist, there often stands a supportive force that propels their dreams forward, and in Plies’ case, that force was his brother, Big Gates.
