Among the many YouTubers who have succeeded in winning the hearts of millions of people is Wengie. She is a Chinese-Australian YouTube personality, vlogger, singer, and voice actress. Wengie is famous for a lot of things, from her simple life hacks, DIYs, craft ideas to fun experiments, tricks and pranks.

Her content portfolio also includes hair tutorials, diet & fitness tips, lookbooks, fashion videos, skincare tutorials, and tips. She is a Jill of all trades when it comes to mainstream YouTube content, and her ability to do it all well has made her one of the platform’s most successful personalities. A not so shabby accomplishment for the daughter of first-generation Australian immigrants.

From Tiananmen Square Refugee to International YouTube Star

It is easy to look at Wengie’s international success today and see a young woman who has never faced uncertainty in her life. But in the early years of her existence, that was the defining theme of her life. Born on January 9, 1986, in Guangzhou, China, her family was one of the first-generation immigrants in Australia.

At age 35, her father moved from China to Australia as a refugee after the Tiananmen Square massacre. At the time, he did not know how to speak English. So, he learned it. Years later, his wife joined him, leaving Wengie behind in China under the care of her nanny and grandparents. Wengie then joined her parents when she was four.

She was born Huang Wenjie, with an English translation as Wendie. She started using Wengie when she was teaching dance classes because there were two Wendies at the studio she worked at. Everybody called her Wengie, and it stuck.

After high school, she studied accounting in college and worked as an account for four years before she resigned and got another job as a social media consultant. Following her success at the job, she got promoted to the head of the department.

Wengie’s Journey to YouTube Stardom

While working as a social media consultant, she started her fashion blog. She launched her first YouTube channel, Wengie, on February 11, 2013. On the channel, her content included make-up tutorials, fashion tips, and “Do It Yourself” (DIY) videos. She would film and edit her videos during her lunch breaks and at home after work. She worked so hard to combine building her channel and blog with her day job that even her social life suffered.

However, in August 2014, she eventually decided to quit her job, which was paying her in six figures to pursue YouTube full-time. Speaking in an interview, the YouTuber said it was one of the most challenging things she has ever had to do. Thankfully, it paid off. Within the first three years of creating her channel, it garnered more than 4 million subscribers, making Wengie one of the fastest-growing YouTube stars in 2016. In 2017, her channel won “Best Channel” and “Overall Winner” at that year’s Australian Online Video Awards.

In 2018, she focused mainly on DIY, prank, and slime videos, and as of January of that year, her channel was the 6th most subscribed channel in the How-to and Style category on YouTube. By May 2020, she had reached 14 million subscribers and more than 1.73 billion views. She is currently the most popular YouTuber from Australia.

Wengie also commands a huge following outside of YouTube. On Instagram, she has more than 2.1 million followers. On Facebook, she has over 13 million fans, and there are more than 144 thousand people following her tweets on Twitter. In total, the Chinese-Australian has more than 29.2 million followers on all major social media platforms.

Wengie Has Six Total Channels for Additional Creative Ventures

Since she stormed to YouTube fame, Wengie has shown her creativity does not fit into a box, and she has diverse interests. In pursuit of those interests, she has created multiple channels, as outlets for her creative expression. While her main channel, Wengie, remains her anchor to fame, she has other channels like Wengie Music, Wengie’s Life, ReactiCorns, Munchkin, and Kittycorn Wengie.

Wengie’s Life is home to the YouTuber’s vlogs, where she shares her life with her fans and admirers. The channel has over 1.89 million subscribers and more than 62 million views. Her channel, ReactiCorns, as the name suggests, focuses on her reactions to various trending social and online issues. She runs the channel with her fiancé, Max. The channel also boasts of more than 2.3 million subscribers and has more than 555.8 million views.

Wengie, who is a big lover of animals, has a dedicated channel, Munchkin, for her cats, Coco and Boomba. The modest channel has 2.8 thousand subscribers and over 15 million views. Lastly, Kittycorn Wengie focuses on her gaming on the online game platform, Roblox. On the channel, where she primarily plays Adopt Me, she has over 160,000 subscribers and more than 10 million views.

She is also a Musician

Wengie has also crafted a music career in her short time as a YouTube star. She released her first single, Baby Believe Me, in July 2017. It reached #6 on the Chinese music charts after debuting at #11. She has released additional music since, via her channel, Wengie Music. The channel has more than 1.08 million subscribers and over 82 million views.

Some of her other songs include Oh I Do, Cake, her first English single, Déjà vu, Lace Up, and Mr. Nice Guy. She also released a Korean single, Empire, which debuted at #22 on the Billboard World Digital Songs. The song featured Minnie, from the K-Pop girl group, (G) I-DLE.

What We Know About Wengie’s Personal Life

The YouTube queen is yet to be married, but she is taken. She is in a long time relationship with Max. They started dating in 2011 and got engaged in August 2015 at Yosemite Natural Park. She announced their engagement on her Instagram account.

More popularly known as Maxmello, Wengie’s fiance is also a YouTuber. He co-owns the ReactiCorns channel, where he and his wife share their reactions to trending news offline and online. The couple reportedly first met at the Year 10 Formal in 2000. Ten years after the event, they met again and started a relationship. They have been together ever since.

While his face is plastered all over the star YouTuber’s channel, especially ReactiCorns, Maxmello keeps a relatively lower profile compared to his wife. Outside of their shared channel, he has a self-titled channel, Maxmello, focused on his Roblox games. The channel has more than 277 thousand subscribers and over 51 million views.

She May Have Had Plastic Surgery

There were rumors that the YouTube star underwent plastic surgery, and judging from her before and after pictures, this might be true. Although the speculations were never confirmed, a look at her face after the alleged surgery shows it is highly probable that Wengie had a couple of operations to alter her face.

Observers have noticed a change in her eyes, nose, and cheeks, suggesting that she had double eyelid surgery, a nose job, and botox. A noticeable difference in her lips and jaw also suggests the YouTuber may have gotten jaw shaving and lip fillers. Despite the prevalence of the rumor about her altered look, Wengie is yet to address it, and there is little to suggest that she ever will.
