Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party Sir John Major (born 29 March 1943) is a British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1997. He previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary in the Thatcher administration, and he represented Huntingdon in the House of Commons from 1979 until 2001. Despite the fact that Major was “a huge disappointment to Thatcher,” according to Malcolm Rifkind, he was her favoured option for successor because she intended to “remain in charge of the nation as a backseat driver.” Major led over the United Kingdom’s involvement in the Gulf War in March 1991 and claimed to have negotiated “Game, Set, and Match for Britain” during the talks over the Maastricht Treaty in December 1991, only weeks after taking office.  The Conservative Party went on to win a fourth consecutive election victory, garnering the most votes in British electoral history (over 14 million votes) in the 1992 general election, despite the fact that the British economy was in a recession. However, the Conservatives’ majority in the House of Commons was significantly reduced as a result. He is the only Conservative Party leader to have won an outright majority in a federal election to this day. Following the conclusion of the Cold War, the globe was in the midst of a period of political and military change, which Major presided over as Premier. This included the development of the European Union, which was already a cause of contention within the Conservative Party as a result of its significance in the decline and collapse of Margaret Thatcher’s government. Shortly after being re-elected, the Major Government was tasked with overseeing the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) after the events of Black Wednesday on September 16, 1992. This incident resulted in a loss of trust in his government’s economic policies, and he was never quite able to regain the upper hand in opinion surveys after that point. Despite the ultimate resurgence of economic development, as well as other achievements such as the start of the Northern Ireland Peace Process, the Conservative Party was involved in a series of “sleaze” scandals involving a number of MPs, including Cabinet Ministers, by the mid-1990s. It had reached such a point that Major decided to quit as Conservative Leader in June 1995, asking his detractors to either support him or challenge him; he was promptly challenged by John Redwood, but won re-election with an overwhelming majority. By this time, the Labour Party, under by Tony Blair, was widely seen as a reformed and credible alternative to the Conservative Party, and a huge number of by-election losses had placed a significant burden on the government. In the end, Major was defeated in the 1997 general election, suffering one of the most significant political losses in the country’s history since the Great Reform Act of 1832. Following the loss, Major resigned from his position as Conservative Party leader, and was replaced by David Cameron. Later, he announced his retirement from active politics by resigning from the House of Commons following the 2001 general election. He has already passed the age of 90 and is the oldest surviving former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
