The Matriarch of the Cardinal Family Julia Cardinal, a woman of Cree and Métis descent, is at the heart of Tantoo Cardinal’s upbringing. As the mother of three children, including Tantoo, Julia played a vital role in instilling a deep appreciation for their indigenous heritage and culture.

Tantoo’s Early Years in Anzac, Alberta Tantoo Cardinal was born as Rose Marie Cardinal on July 20, 1950, and she was the youngest of Julia’s three children. The family was raised in the hamlet of Anzac, Alberta, where life was far from conventional. The absence of electricity in their remote surroundings encouraged young Tantoo to tap into her vivid imagination while exploring the natural world around her.

A Special Nickname: “Tantoo” It’s worth noting the origin of Tantoo Cardinal’s distinctive nickname. Her grandmother, while bonding over blueberry picking trips, affectionately referred to her as “Tantoo.” This nickname, derived from the insect repellent they used during their berry-picking adventures, became an endearing term of familiarity within the family.

Preserving Culture and Tradition Julia Cardinal played a pivotal role in preserving and passing down the Cree language, traditional customs, and the rich cultural heritage of their people to her children. Growing up Métis in Canada, Tantoo faced unique challenges, but it was through her mother’s guidance and wisdom that she gained a profound understanding of her cultural identity.
