Tatanka Means, the accomplished Native American actor and comedian, has captivated audiences with his versatile performances on screen and his comedic talent. While we often hear about his professional life, let’s take a moment to learn more about his parents, Russell Means and Gloria Means, and the significant roles they played in shaping Tatanka’s life and his enduring commitment to Native American culture.

Russell Means, a name synonymous with activism and cultural advocacy, was not only Tatanka’s father but also a prominent leader in the American Indian Movement (AIM). Born of Oglala Lakota descent, Russell was a tireless advocate for Native American rights, civil rights, and the enforcement of treaties and sovereignty for federally recognized tribes.

In the 1970s, during the height of the American Indian Movement, Russell Means and his fellow activists conducted large-scale protests, aiming to raise awareness about the challenges faced by Native Americans. These efforts extended to educating mainstream Americans about Native American issues. Russell Means’ dedication to his cause made him one of the pivotal figures in this movement, and his influence remains significant in the ongoing struggle for Native American rights.

However, Russell Means’ contributions weren’t limited to activism alone. He made a seamless transition into acting, becoming a recognizable face in the world of film. One notable collaboration with his son, Tatanka, was in the film “Tiger Eyes,” where he portrayed the terminally ill screen father of Tatanka’s character. Tragically, Russell Means passed away shortly after filming concluded, leaving behind an enduring legacy.

Gloria Means, Tatanka’s mother, also played an integral role in shaping her son’s life. While not as widely recognized as her activist husband, Gloria’s support and influence on her children’s upbringing were equally essential. Together with Russell, she instilled in her children a deep appreciation for their Native American heritage and culture.

Tatanka Means embodies the combined legacy of his parents. His full Lakota name, Tatanka Wanbli Sapa Xila Sabe, means “Black Buffalo Eagle.” This cultural significance underscores his unwavering commitment to portraying Native men as modern, complex individuals, counteracting stereotypes that have sometimes prevailed in Hollywood.

Tatanka’s successful acting career, with roles in films like “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Son,” showcases his dedication to accurate and authentic portrayals of Native American characters. His achievements as a comedian and entrepreneur further emphasize his commitment to cultural awareness and advocacy for Native communities.

The Means family’s legacy of activism and cultural preservation continues through Tatanka’s work, and his parents, Russell Means and Gloria Means, undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping their son’s life and dedication to promoting Native American culture. Their enduring influence reaches far beyond their own generation and continues to impact how Native Americans are represented and celebrated in the United States and beyond.
