John Mulaney had been working as a professional comedian for years before Saturday Night Live changed his status for life and like many who are now his fans, you probably did not know of him then. However, that changed when he joined the sketch comedy show in 2008. Since then, he has been one of the most accomplished comedians to date, with fingers in stage, film and TV productions.

His stand-up career has spanned over 15 years and in addition to that, he is renowned for voicing Andrew Glouberman in the Netflix comedy, Big Mouth, and Spider-Ham in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. By all metrics, it has been a successful career for the comedian since SNL.

Post-SNL, John Mulaney Has Found International Stardom As A  Comedian, Actor, And Producer

Every successful person has that one moment that sparked the chain of success. Summarily for John, it was his time on Saturday Night Live. It brought him widespread praise and improved his national standing as a comedian. Once he became a headliner within the first few months of joining SNL, John Mulaney’s trajectory outside of the sketch comedy has been on the rise. He has gone on to dabble into various aspects of comedy and show business, living the dream that defined his childhood years.

He has worked as an actor in live-action and voice roles, served as a writer and producer, and his status among stand-up comedians keeps going higher.

Mulaney Has Released Four Stand Up Specials and Five Comedy Albums

In 2009, John released the first of four stand-up specials. He released the half-hour special under the Comedy Central banner, Comedy Central Presents. Three years after, he released his first one-hour special, John Mulaney: New in Town. It was produced by and released under Comedy Central.

As his name grew and became a more prominent feature on the stand-up comedy circuit with sold-out venues, John attracted other media outlets’ attention. In 2015, following a deal with Netflix, he released his third stand-up special, The Comeback Kid, on November 13, 2015.

The special was a critical success. It earned Mulaney a nomination from the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. His specials finally won an Emmy in 2018, with another Netflix project, John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City. Aside from its Emmy recognition, it was also well-received by audiences with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and sparked a viral meme on social media.

Outside of his TV specials, John has also released five comedy albums. Except for the fifth, they are all based on his TV specials and available on music streaming platforms. The first two, The Top Part and New in Town, were released under Comedy Central Records. In contrast, the last two were independently released.

His specials’ success is a byproduct of his stand-up career, which has placed him among the most accomplished new age performers in the industry.

He has gone on at least four comedy tours and performed with several industry legends like Bill Murray, Jon Stewart, Steve Martin, and several others. John Mulaney is also a frequent face at various industry specials and events like Night of Too Many Stars, Hilarity for Charity, and The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

His Semi-autobiographical Sitcom ‘Mulaney’ and Other TV Shows

John Mulaney is a busy man. While he spends much of his time touring, he also invests a considerable amount of time in front of the camera as an actor. He made his acting debut in 2004, in an episode of Jump Cuts.

He appeared in nine projects before, during, and after his Saturday Night Live stint. Since then, he has made further appearances in 20 more, including an autobiographical comedy show, Mulaney, between 2014 and 2015.

The Fox comedy show was one of his first major projects after SNL. As the lead character, he played a fictionalized version of himself, a standup comedian who gets a big break after getting hired by Lou Cannon, played by Martin Short.

Despite the ambitious writing of the show, it suffered from unflattering comparisons to Seinfield and was panned by critics. After one season and thirteen episodes with low ratings, the show got cancelled.

The poor outing did not end John’s TV ambitions. He has gone on to appear in other works, either as a guest star or supporting character. He has appeared in episodes of Difficult People, Portlandia, Dickinson, and Crashing.

His most famous works on television, however, has come via voice acting. Alongside Nick Kroll, he has been voicing Andrew Glouberman on the hit Netflix animation comedy, Big Mouth, since 2017.

For his work on Big Mouth, John Mulaney has received a couple of award recognitions. He has a nomination from MTV Movie + TV Awards for Best Comedic Performance and Dorian Award for TV Musical Performance of the Year.

Aside from Big Mouth, He also had a voice role in Animals and in his film debut, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, playing Spider-Ham.

The Standup Comedian Is Also An Accomplished Producer And Writer

By default, as a stand-up comedian, John Mulaney is a writer. But he has taken his writing beyond comedy routines to TV shows and programs.

As a writer, he has over 26 credits to his name, in works like Documentary Now!, John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, Maya & Marty, Mulaney, and several more. He is also credited with writing award programs like the 2019 and 2018 Golden Globe Awards. Other writing credits include the 2011 White House Correspondents Association Dinner, Oh, Hello on Broadway, and Comedy Central Roast of James Franco.

As a producer, John Mulaney has found success bringing shows like Big Mouth, Mulaney, Ugly Americans, and Oh, Hello on Broadway to life. The latter is a filmed special based on his comedy act with Nick Kroll on Broadway. The show ran for 138 performances from September 2016 to January 2017.

He also produced John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, a children’s musical comedy special on Netflix. The special received two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2020 for Outstanding Variety Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. In all, it has been a busy and fruitful career since he left SNL, and it is a success that equally extends to his personal life.

His SNL Career Brought Him Accolades and National Recognition

Working on Saturday Night Live was the match that lit Mulaney’s career path. In the same year he joined the sketch comedy, he became a stand-up comedy headliner and helped create the recurring and popular SNL character, Stefon.

He spent four seasons on the show, during which he worked mostly behind the scenes as a writer. The comedian made occasional appearances on the Weekend Update segment and helped craft some of the best sketches between 2009 and 2012.

His work not only made millions of people laugh, but it also received recognition from award bodies. Alongside other writers, Mulaney received nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series throughout his time on the show from the Emmys.

John Mulaney also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for a sketch performance alongside Seth Meyers, Justin Timberlake, and Katreese Barnes. Since he left SNL to greater success as an individual performer, he has returned to the show as a host three times. He is the fourth SNL writer to host the show without being a cast member.

His Wife, Annamarie Tendler, Is A Makeup Artist

If you are a fan of John Mulaney, one person who tends to come up in his routines is his girlfriend turned wife, Annamarie Tendler. They have been together since the late 2000s after they met on a group trip to Martha’s Vineyard. Although John was a known entity with rising fame, his wife-to-be was an unknown makeup artist and business owner.

Annamarie was born on June 9, 1985, in Connecticut and raised in Jewish background. Raised in New York, she moved to Los Angeles after high school and studied hairstyling at Vidal Sassoon during her gap year. Although she started college after it ended, she dropped out shortly and began working as a makeup artist.

During this period, she started a Tumblr blog, The Daily Face, which brought her immense popularity and success. She wrote two books, Pin It!: 20 Fabulous Bobby Pin Hairstyles and Daily Face: 25 Makeup Looks for Day, Night, and Everything In Between!

She has also worked in show business, with a role on her husband’s Broadway show, Oh, Hello, being one of her most notable ones. Tendler partnered with Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls for a YouTube tutorial series, The Other Side. She has also worked on CollegeHumor Originals, The Six, and Aziz Ansari’s special, Dangerously Delicious.

Aside from hairstyling and makeup artistry, she is also a business owner. She owns Silk Parlor, an online shop that sells lampshades and textile crafts. Annamarie Tendler started the business after an unsuccessful attempt at purchasing a Victorian lampshade. After studying the industry and the art, she began making and selling handcrafted Victorian-style lampshades to great success.

Annamarie Once Accused Ben Affleck of Groping Her

The comedian’s wife rarely makes the news outside of their wholesome marriage and business ventures. However, in 2017, she caused a bit of a stir when she claimed that the famed actor, Ben Affleck, had groped her in a series of tweets.

Annamarie posted the tweets following Ben’s public apology to Hilarie Burton for inappropriate behaviour when she hosted MTV’s TRL in 2003 in the heat of the MeToo movement. But despite calling the actor out and admitting his past errors, Affleck has never publicly denied nor confirm Annamarie’s allegations.

John Mulaney and Annamarie Have Been Married Since 2014

When they met at Martha’s Vineyard, Annamarie knew the two of them would become a couple. John, however, was oblivious to fate’s plans and needed a push. Eventually, they began dating shortly afterwards. In 2010, Annamarie proclaimed that the two would get married four years before it actually happened.

In 2014, her prediction came to pass after more than five years as a couple. They married in a New York 1920s woodland-deco themed ceremony at Boiceville. The wedding was officiated by Dan Levy, a longtime friend of the comedian. Since they said I Do, the couple has enjoyed a blissful union.

They are yet to have children. However, they do have a French bulldog, Petunia, whom they consider as their daughter. The dog is a popular member of the John Mulaney family, with over 169,000 followers on her Instagram page.
