Is The House That Vanished True Story?

Yes, the BBC podcast, The House That Vanished, is based on the true story of Neville Presho.

Neville fell in love with a 150-year-old house on Tory Island and bought the house in 1982.

However, he received a distressing letter in 1994 that his house suffered serious damage from a storm. He returned to the Island with his wife but found his house vanished without a trace.

The only remains of his house was a bathtub lying around on the shore. Neville was certain his house was demolished but did not know who did it.

He asked around the neighborhood and received a range of answers.

One builder said he was offered money to demolish the house; some said it was damaged in an arson attack; while others said it was destroyed by a storm.

Finally, Neville took a legal route and accused hotelier Patrick Doohan of demolishing his house. Patrick’s hotel was built near his house and was blocking his view of the sea.

After five scrutinizing years, the case was solved and Neville got justice. He received 46,000 euros for the property damage.
