Roblox was formed by Erik Cassel and David Baszucki in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of considerable genres coded in the programming language Lua. For most of Roblox’s history, it was relatively small, both as a platform and as a business. Roblox started to develop rapidly in the second half of the 2010s, and this development has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roblox is free to play, with in-game purchases available via a virtual currency named Robux. As of August 2020, Roblox had more than 164 million monthly active users, including over half of all American kids under 16 years old. Although Roblox has received generally positive reviews from critics, it has faced criticism for its allegations of exploitative practices toward kids, moderation, and microtransactions.

Roblox permits players to create their games utilizing its proprietary engine, Roblox Studio, which can then be played by other users. Games are made with a by-product of the language Lua called Luau. The majority of games produced utilizing Roblox Studio are developed by children, and a total of 20 million games a year are created using it

TechCrunch reported in March 2021 that Roblox games are largely different from established traditions in free-to-play video games, finding that successful Roblox games were geared towards prompt satisfaction and that the addition of tutorials greatly decreased player engagement, contrary to specified wisdom regarding free-to-play games. Companies have utilized Roblox as a platform for advergames advertising their products.
