Types of nuts and bolts
Sarah Garza What are the different types of bolts and nuts?
There are many types of bolts and hardware nuts. Most, if not all, bolt types have machine threads. A threaded bolt screws into nuts to hold or fasten materials together. Bolt types include eye bolts, wheel bolts and machine bolts while types of nuts include cap nuts, expansion nuts and u-nuts.
How many types of nut bolts are there?
By definition, bolts are threaded fasteners that are intended to be mated with a nut. Here is a gallery showing 12 standard types of bolts.
How many types of mechanical nuts are there?
Types
| Name | Also known as |
|---|---|
| Acorn nut (cap nut) | Crown hex nut, blind nut, cap nut, domed cap nut, or dome nut |
| Barrel nut | Steel cross dowel or dowel nut, cross dowel (woodworking) |
| Cage nut | Caged nut, captive nut, clip nut |
| Clip-on nut | J-nut or U-nut, sheet metal nut, speed nut (ambiguously) |
What is nut and its types?
A nut is a fastener that consists of a block with a threaded hole in the centre. The hole contains ‘female’ threads that typically correspond to the ‘male’ threads of a bolt or screw. Nuts are used with their ‘mating’ bolt or screw to fasten materials together. Jam nuts or locking nuts.
Which type of bolts is mostly used?
The principal types of bolts commonly used include: Anchor Bolts. Blind Bolts. Carriage Bolts.
Where is capstan nut used?
A capstan is a vertical-axled rotating machine developed for use on sailing ships to multiply the pulling force of seamen when hauling ropes, cables, and hawsers.
How do you screw a nut into a bolt?
Take a nut that fits the bolt and place it at the opposite side of the bolt, away from the head. Then grab the head of the bolt so that it doesn’t move around and hold it still while you spin the nut clockwise, gently pressing down on it.
Can you use a nut on a screw?
A screw has external threads just like a bolt. But a screw is inserted into a threaded or unthreaded hole, and is tightened or loosened by turning its head. Wood screws and sheet metal screws make their own threads in the hole, so they are not used with a nut.
What order do nuts bolts and washers go?
If there is only one washer used with a nut/bolt, it usually goes on the nut side. The nut in most circumstances is more movable, and is more commonly turned to tighten the assembly. The washer helps prevent damage to the surface of the object being fastened.
What are bolts and nuts used for?
What Is a Nut, Bolt and Screw? A nut is a component that fits over the end of a bolt and helps it hold objects in place. A bolt is a non-tapered fastener that uses a washer and nut to hold objects together.
Can I use a bolt without a nut?
The academic distinction, per Machinery’s Handbook, is in their intended design: bolts are designed to pass through an unthreaded hole in a component and be fastened with the aid of a nut, although such a fastener can be used without a nut to tighten into a threaded component such as a nut-plate or tapped housing.
Can you put a nut on a self tapping screw?
Fastening of the nut may be done using the same power drive, wrench or any hand tool whilst holding the screw head (2) with a similar tool appropriate for the purpose. Fastening of the nut may also be performed by driving the self–tapping screw (3) whilst holding the nut.
Do self tapping screws come loose?
Self–tapping screws have various names. They’re often called metal screws, sheet metal screws, tapping screws, or tapper screws. The screw will become loose and not thread properly and securely if the hole’s too big. If the hole’s too small, the screw can break or cause the material to split or break.
Do I need to drill a hole for a self tapping screw?
Before you use self–tapping screws, it’s helpful, although not mandatory, to drill a pilot hole through the material. This ensures the screw will go in easily and will be positioned correctly. Make sure to use a smaller drill bit than the self–tapping screw itself when drilling the pilot hole.
How can you tell if a screw is self tapping?
For harder surfaces, self tapping screws might have little notches on the thread to help cut the thread, just like a tap. Not all tapping screws have a pointy tip, some will be blunt or flat.
What makes a screw self-tapping?
For hard substrates such as metal or hard plastics, the self–tapping ability is often created by cutting a gap in the continuity of the thread on the screw, generating a flute and cutting edge similar to those on a tap.
