Vincent Connare Comic Sans

As Microsoft released Windows 1995, it included a new program, Microsoft Bob, which included a cartoon that would speak to the speech bubbles. Connare felt that Microsoft Bob cartoons needed a less formal font; something more suited to children.

Inspired by DC and Marvel comic books, Connare created Comic Sans in 1994 by using the mouse and cursor to draw intentionally loose letters. Microsoft Bob inevitably faded into the dark, but Comic Sans secured its legacy after the Walt Disney Company was quickly taken over.

Vincent Connare Reception

Soon after Connare created Comic Sans, the font was adopted by a number of prominent companies, including Pineapple, BMW and Burberry. Despite the commercial success of the font, it is controversial and its critics are passionate about it.

Hatred goes so far that a group of Canadians campaigned for a police ban in 2005. Connare was not dissuaded by the negative response to his creation; in fact, at the Fourth Annual Boring Conference, Connare said that the contempt for his work was “mildly amusing.”

Comic Sans has become commonly used in applications ranging from newspaper titles and bookmarks to the Spanish World Cup Trophy and Pope’s photo album in the Vatican. Connare said he was very proud of the font, offering a variety of rationales. Arguing that “Comic Sans does what it was commissioned to do, it is loved by kids, mums and many dads. So it did its job very well. It matched the brief!” He has also referred to it as “the best joke I’ve ever told.”

Comic Sans is a particularly popular font; in addition, Simon Garfield’s new font book, “Just My Style,” devotes the first chapter to Comic Sans. Comic Sans is also listed in the London Design Museum’s “How to Design a Typeface” book, which has been reviewed in London newspapers. Comic Sans has also appeared on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.

Vincent Connare Quotes

“If you love it, you don’t know much about typography. And if you hate it, you really don’t know much about typography either and you should get another hobby.”
“People who don’t like Comic Sans don’t know anything about design.”

Vincent Connare Fonts

Combs is one of the many haters of Comic Sans, a font that looks like writing in an old-fashioned comic book, invented 20 years ago by Vincent Connare. Connare recognises what he did. He reffers the  comic sans “the most hated and loved font in the world.”

Connare, a typographical specialist, worked at Microsoft in 1993 when he was asked to provide input on the new program fonts. “A little dog came up when I loaded the CD. He spoke in a speech bubble like you would get in a newspaper cartoon strip, but it was in the Times New Roman style font, “Connarre says.. “I thought, ‘That’s silly. Dogs don’t talk like that.’ So I said it would look better if it looked like a comic book.”

He traced a few letters on the screen, and Comic Sans was born three days later. The font was used in Windows 95, and it quickly ended up on every device in the world. Some dislike the font, but the graphic design of Holly and Dave Combs has gone as far as creating a website in an attempt to ban it. “Comic Sans is a blight on the typography landscape,” Dave says.

Their blog, Ban Comic Sans, is a “campaign to stop the abuse of the Comic Sans font,” says Dave. Connare explained it best, “If you love it, you don’t know much about typography, and if you hate Comic Sans, you don’t know much about typography, so you probably need to get another hobby.”
