The mystery surrounding Dennis’s absence began to unravel at the end of Season 12 when the gang, along with Dennis, faced various absurd predicaments. In the finale, titled “Dennis’ Double Life,” viewers were blindsided when Dennis announced that he had fathered a child and would be leaving Philadelphia to be with his newfound family.

The revelation sent shockwaves through the fanbase, leaving them to wonder whether this was the end of Dennis Reynolds on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” The announcement was made more perplexing by the fact that it coincided with Glenn Howerton’s real-life commitments to other projects.

Glenn Howerton’s Outside Commitments: A Key Factor

One of the primary reasons behind Dennis’s absence was Glenn Howerton’s burgeoning career outside of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Howerton found himself increasingly involved in other projects, including his role as Jack Griffin in the television series “A.P. Bio.” Balancing multiple commitments became a challenge, and as a result, the decision was made for Howerton to take a step back from the show.

Despite Howerton’s commitment to other projects, both he and the creators of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” assured fans that Dennis’s departure was not permanent. This left the door open for the character’s potential return in future seasons.

Season 13: The Dennis Dilemma

The absence of Dennis Reynolds loomed large over Season 13, leading to speculation among fans about the character’s fate. The writers cleverly addressed the void left by Dennis by introducing new characters and exploring different dynamics within the gang. While the season was well-received, the absence of the charismatic and often morally bankrupt Dennis was palpable.

A Glorious Return: The Reappearance of Dennis

Much to the relief and excitement of fans, Glenn Howerton made a triumphant return as Dennis Reynolds in Season 13, confirming that his departure was not a permanent exit from the show. The character’s return was marked by the gang’s trademark dysfunction and dark humor, as they attempted to navigate their relationships with Dennis in the wake of his unexpected reappearance.
