Why is it called Trap Music? It is called Trap Music because it once described hip-hop as associated with illegal substance dealers.

The trap is a slang word that is used in Atlanta to define a place or a house where the dealers would go to buy or sell illegal substances. There was a heightened risk of them being caught by the police, but still, the dealers would go there to procure their goods.

The term comes from the phrase “mouse trap.” Just like how a mouse walks into the mouse trap to get food, the dealers would walk into the trap to make a deal with a high chance of being trapped and caught by the cops.

Trap music started in Atlanta, Georgia. The Southern US state is the birthplace of the genre.

The emergence of rap music from the ghettos and into mainstream popularity helped inspire a new generation which henceforth brought new artists into the hip-hop scene during the 1980s.

Inspired by the hip-hop culture and its precedent, many new artists during the 1990s such as UGK, Tupac, Biggie, and NWK among others birthed what now is known as gangsta rap.

The contents of gangsta rap included a violent lifestyle and the underlooked and underdeveloped neighborhoods in the urban areas of the US. Gangsta rap would capture the imagination of the poor neighborhoods of Atlanta, Georgia, which then became a catalyst in the emergence of Trap music.
